A search of his home uncovered 451 insoles, which he had been carefully storing. Matsuzaki was apprehended on October 17 in the city of Takaoka; around 4:00 a.m., police officers spotted a suspicious scooter near a junior high school and waited for its owner to return. During a subsequent check, eight insoles were discovered in the pockets of his jacket. The man confessed to entering the school premises and taking the items from the students’ shoe lockers. According to the police, Matsuzaki may have committed similar thefts at more than 30 elementary, junior high, and high schools. He told officers that he began stealing insoles when he was a junior high school student himself, and that his activities had intensified about two years ago. He would enter the buildings at night, searching for unlocked entrances. Matsuzaki claimed that he selected his targets in advance, identifying girls online or on television. One student, whose insoles went missing in September, told the broadcaster KNB that the lockers at her school are not labeled with students’ names, and their numbers do not correspond to the identification numbers assigned to the pupils. The police are currently determining how the man managed to identify the specific lockers belonging to individual female students. Investigators suspect that Matsuzaki collected the shoe insoles to satisfy his own personal needs, rather than for the purpose of reselling them.
